I agree. I work at a resort in la jolla doing valet. So today while driving a few prius's while I was stepping on the gas pedal I reached up to the little gear selector and moved it from DRIVE to NEUTRAL. What do you know it disengaged the motor and the car began to coast to a stop. These people are dumb.

AT HIGH SPEED the ecu DOES NOT let you switch into neutral. Factory Programmed.... TRY 60.
At low speed yes it does let you put it into neutral. I would be shocked if you could at 60 or higher speeds safely... I forgot the set rate.

Ya, you are probably right. I can't go 60 in a parking lot to try though.. That does seem weird why would toyota have it set so you can't go to neutral after 60mph? Doesn't make a whole lot of sense unless I'm missing something.

I believe so you can't knock it into neutral accidentally, thus endangering your life...

indeed, on the prius the gas engine kicks in at around 20-26 mph, depending on how heavy footed you may be it may kick in earlier.

putting it in neutral as a natural reacting.

Same with my bike. Stuck WOT. Just pop in the clutch.
It's a no brainier,even in a panic situation like that (it's happened to me!).

Agree im tired of hearing it maybe if they listened to the tape they would understand what happened. Kinda hard when every one is screaming and its a rental car so you dont know any of it. I dont think the road where they were on had a barrier so they could grind it to a stop either. Best logical way if I was in that position.
